Hannah Traore Gallery Presents James Perkins Solo Exhibition for Focus at Frieze Los Angeles

Frieze Los Angeles | Santa Monica Airport, Los Angeles, Booth F10 On View February 29-March 3, 2024

Hannah Traore Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of recent paintings and sculptures by James Perkins for Focus at Frieze Los Angeles—a special section of the fair curated by Essence Harden, Visual Arts Curator and Program Manager at the California African American Museum, that features shows from twelve galleries founded in the last twelve years. This presentation is a continuation of Burying Painting, Perkins’ first solo exhibition with Hannah Traore Gallery in 2022. Through these works, Perkins creates a contemporary discourse for the nonsite—a term originated by Robert Smithson in 1968 to describe an indoor earthwork, or an actual site in nature that takes on metaphoric significance when its organic material is presented in a context separate from its natural environment.—

  • Monocle Quality of Life Conference, Munich 2023

    September 5, 2023

Still buzzing after returning from last weekend’s Monocle Quality of Life Conference in Munich. This truly unique experience with over 150 delegates from around the globe in an intimate setting listening in on some of the world’s top experts, execs, creatives, public servants and professionals at Allianz HQ bordering the venerable Englischer Garten.

Speakers ranging from entrepreneurs manufacturing innovative micro e-cars, such as Merlin Ouboter (son of the inventor of the modern kick scooter) of Microlino, to heads of offices of public realm like Ya-Ting Lei of NYC, to young, dynamic mayors (for contrast and commonality) like Matúš Vallo of Bratislava and Eric Johnson of Dallas respectively, to Carsten Spohr, the CEO of Lufthansa, discussing air travel now and in the future.

There was an overwhelming consensus amongst the speakers and delegates alike that the event lent a convivial energy throughout the proceedings, whether sharing Negroni Sbagliato at the famous Schumann’s Bar on the formal Hofgarten, at the main HQ auditorium, over a four-course dinner at Gallerie Thomas, or at Club Bayerischer Hof, where many of us celebrated into the early hours. You were an absolute legend if you made the 8:30am 5k run the following day. I, for one, did not. -HD

Using tools such as ChatGPT4 and MidJourney ai engines challenge us to stick with first principles and core design values as a way to broaden the creative phase when engaging with clients and collaborators. We see this as an impartial ‘advisor’, with no aesthetic agenda that can potentially create a myriad of opportunities and logic streams during the design process.

    Studio Visit: Martin Rauch

    October 1, 2022

This fall’s field trip down to Western Austria (via Zurich) to visit the studio and production facility of architect Martin Rauch, arguably the foremost authority and innovator on the technique of rammed earth construction was super informative and fascinating.

The Vorarlberg region of the Austrian Alps, with its many milennia of erosion and glacial movement have produced a unique, golden soil with a dense composition that is optimal for such building techniques.

Lehm Ton Erde/Martin Rauch has been technical consultant for such notable buildings as the Virgilius Mountain Resort by Matteo Thun, Ricola AG’s herb facility in Basel, Switzerland by Herzog and DeMeuron, and the King Abdulaziz Center with SNØHETTA as well as executing many of their own projects and developments.

Despite how the method we’ve seen for centuries has been typically executed, (region depending) his studio is pushing the technical envelope on automated production, coordination and detailing in ways never seen before.

HTDSTUDIO has spent several years researching and designing various projects and typologies using rammed earth technology on projects from the Caribbean to Southeast Africa.

    Hanebergs Competition

    June 9, 2022

HTDSTUDIO has teamed up with interior design firm an/ca (www.anca.nu) to design concepts for a 4,000 square-meter barn in Western Näshulta, Sweden as part of an invited competition as announced this summer.

We were invited by the developers of the local farm to adapt and re-use the existing structure as a new community center, which looks to be both a local and global landmark with an emphasis on community and culture as well as sustainability and circularity.

The project also has set goals to utilize labor, expertise and materials local to Södermanland County.

The selection phase is pending, do check back for the results!
